Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about firescaping, consultations, the garden, and getting involved

1. What is FireWise landscaping or “firescaping”?

FireWise landscaping—also known as firescaping—is the practice of designing and maintaining your yard to reduce wildfire risk. It uses fire-resistant plants, smart spacing, and strategic hardscaping to help protect your home from embers, radiant heat, and direct flame. Our approach is based on defensible space guidelines tailored to Colorado’s unique climate and ecosystems.

2. How is this different from xeriscaping?

While both firescaping and xeriscaping use drought-tolerant plants and conserve water, firescaping goes further by emphasizing defensible space zones and plant flammability. We blend the two practices to help homeowners achieve beautiful, water-wise gardens that also protect against wildfire.

3. Where will the FireWise Botanical Garden be located?

We are working to establish the Front Range FireWise Botanical Garden in Boulder, Colorado, against the foothills of the Flatirons. We are working with CU Boulder to get permission to use part of the CU Boulder South Campus. The garden will serve as a demonstration space for fire-adapted plant palettes, educational classes, events, and ecological restoration.

4. Can I hire you to help with my own landscape?

Yes! We offer a full range of services, including:

  • On-site consultations

  • Custom firescape designs

  • Seasonal and ongoing maintenance

  • Irrigation assessments and soil improvement
Whether you’re starting from scratch or retrofitting an existing yard, we can help.

5. How do I know if my property is at risk for wildfire?

If you live near open space, grasslands, foothills, or forests—especially in Colorado—you are likely in the wildland–urban interface (WUI), where homes meet natural fuels. During our consultation, we’ll assess your specific risks and prioritize actionable solutions.

6. How much does a consultation or design cost?

We offer different service tiers depending on your needs. Pricing is always transparent and based on scope, travel, and site complexity. Consultations tend to take less time than full designs, therefore they tend to be more affordable. Reach out through our Contact Form or call us at (720) 295 0860 for a quote.

7. Can I visit the botanical garden now?

Not yet—but stay tuned! We are in the land acquisition and fundraising phase. Our goal is to build a demonstration garden that’s open to the public year-round. Donations and partnerships are critical to making this a reality.

8. How can I help or get involved?

You can support the mission in several ways:

  • Donate to help fund the garden and outreach efforts

  • Partner with us through your business or organization

  • Volunteer your skills in horticulture, land development, education, or fundraising
Visit our Take Action page to get started.

9. Are donations tax-deductible?

We are in the process of securing 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Until finalized, donations may not be tax-deductible. We will provide updates as we move forward.

10. Do you only serve Boulder?

No—we proudly serve residents, HOAs, developers, and municipalities across the Front Range, including Superior, Louisville, Golden, Lafayette, and beyond. We’re happy to travel for larger projects or regional fire mitigation needs.
